Your location can mean a lot as a musician. Even though social media can connect you to people all over the world and create an online fan base, it is still crucial to create a fan base in person.
And how do you create a fan base in person? Live music! And how do you perform live? By living in a place with ample opportunity!
However, as independent musicians, you can’t just drop everything to go live in L.A. – (it’s not that you don’t have the talent to) it’s that the competition for opportunity is large and the cost of living is even larger. So, instead of just giving you a list of the best music cities, I have instead created a list of the best inexpensive music cities.
So without further ado, here are the top five inexpensive cities for musicians:
#1 Memphis, TN
Average Rent: $1,004

Why you should move: Beale Street, which has live music every day and night. It also only 3 hrs away from Nashville.
#2 Asheville, NC
Average Rent: $1,261
Popular Genres:
Americana, bluegrass, rock, indie, blues, soul, funk, hip hop
Why you should move: The city values both traditional and contemporary music, boasts several festivals, and has a gorgeous scenic backdrop. It is also only 3 ½ hours to Atlanta, and 4 ½ to Nashville.
#3 New Orleans, LA
Average Rent: $1,287
Popular Genres:
Jazz, blues, R&B, zydeco, bounce, ragtime
Why you should move: Music is the livelihood of New Orleans and the city has numerous bars and clubs that feature live music.
#4 Pittsburgh, PA
Average Rent: $1,310

Why you should move: Pittsburgh has a strong DIY arts and music community.
#5 Minneapolis, MN
Average Rent: $1,339
