Hey Upstage Family! This week we will be discussing the difference between physical music and digital music.
Physical music media includes vinyls, tape recordings, and CDs. Digital music appears as a digital file that can be purchased or streamed.
Aside from their physical & digital qualities, another interesting difference between the two forms of music is actually how they are produced!
Physical music is created by capturing or engraving the sound onto a physical format such as a Vinyl or CD. On the flipside, digital music is created by capturing sound and then converting it to a binary format. This process (digitization) actually flattens the sound.
If you look at just the differences between production of physical and digital music, physical would have to then be the clear winner of “best sound.”
However, physical media still has its drawbacks. Digital music is much more convenient and reliable than physical music. Vinyls can melt in the hot sun and don’t even go near a CD with greasy hands – not to mention how easily they get scratched.
But you just can’t beat the sound of physical media. There are definitely differences between CDs, Vinyls, and cassette tapes, but overall the sound quality is much more three dimensional and alive. Just try listening to a song on vinyl (or CD) and then stream the same one directly afterwards. You’ll feel the difference.
Let us know- will you be making CDs, vinyls, tapes or other physical forms of media for your next release?
In other news,
you've been polled!
Here are the results from the poll done on Instagram earlier this week:
