Hey Upstage Family! This week we will be discussing song "hooks" and their relationship to TikTok.
The "hook" of a song is the catchiest or most memorable part of a song. TikTok is a social media platform that showcases short form content. What do these two things have in common?
Well, since the platform’s launch and merge with Musical.ly in 2018, TikTok has been responsible for the popularization of several songs. We all know at least one song that became a hit with the help of TikTok like “Say So” by Doja Cat, “Daylight” by David Kushner, “Driver’s License” by Olivia Rodrigo, and “Lottery (Renegade)” by K CAMP.
TikTok has even re-popularized songs that were released decades ago like “Dreams”(Fleetwood Mac) “Potential Breakup Song” (Aly & AJ) and “Ride It” (Jay Sean).
The driving factors behind these songs taking off on TikTok? Their memorable hooks. Hooks are generally about 10-15 seconds long which was originally the maximum length a video on TikTok was allowed to be. Now, several trends on TikTok are created from or with hooks.
What can we do with that information as artists?
Well, we could focus on writing brilliant hooks that we believe could become a trend. We could also try to start trends ourselves using the hooks of our songs. No matter what, it is important to create and capitalize on the most memorable part of our songs. As we’ve seen, the hooks are oftentimes what fans connect with the most!
